Federal Government Prepared to Send Dozens Federal Agents to the Bay Area

The Trump administration was preparing on Wednesday to deploy dozens of law enforcement personnel to the San Francisco Bay Area for a large-scale immigration enforcement operation, prompting condemnation from state officials.

Information of the Operation

Information of the operation were still emerging, but it will reportedly include more than 100 federal agents, according to reports. The personnel are expected to begin using the US Coast Guard base in across the bay, opposite San Francisco. It was not confirmed whether national guard troops would join the operation.

Political Response

The deployment comes after months of statements by Donald Trump to take action against the liberal city. The state's leader Gavin Newsom condemned the action, calling it “taken directly from the autocrat's manual”.

“He dispatches unidentified officers, he dispatches Border Patrol, he dispatches ICE, he instills worry and terror in the neighborhood so that he can take credit for addressing that by dispatching the military forces,” Newsom said. “This is exactly like the incendiary fighting the fire.”

Municipal Readiness

San Francisco is the most recent large urban area focused on by the federal effort of large-scale detentions. The mission is likely to cause a standoff between the White House and city officials who have pledged to stop armed border control in the city.

San Franciscans have been gearing up for months for Trump to fulfill frequent statements to deploy forces to the city. At a Wednesday media briefing, San Francisco’s city leader emphasized that the city was prepared.

“During this period, we have been expecting the likelihood of some kind of federal deployment in our city,” stated the official, noting that he had enacted new policies on Wednesday to “enhance the city’s protection of our foreign-born residents, and guarantee our offices are organized prior to any federal deployment.”

Legal Background

In spite of court battles to operations in a several municipalities, including Illinois, the Pacific Northwest and LA, Trump has asserted “absolute authority” to dispatch the state troops in cities, pointing to the federal statute which enables presidents limited power to send forces on American territory.

Local Response

Newsom – who previously served as San Francisco’s mayor – had committed to take action “immediately” to a operation in the city. “The concept that the federal government can dispatch personnel into our cities with no legitimate cause grounded in reality, no monitoring, no accountability, disregard for regional control – it constitutes an attack on the judicial framework,” he said on Wednesday.

Local organizations, including civil rights groups created during the previous presidential term, have prepared to swiftly gather a public demonstration in the city, as well as vigils at local libraries.

Neighborhood Effect

In San Francisco’s Mission area, a largely Hispanic neighborhood, local representative informed journalists last week she and her voters had been anticipating this situation. “The point that employees avoid workplaces, when minority individuals can’t freely walk outside without the fear of government officers racially profiling and apprehending them, the time when families keep children home, are too scared to go to the food market or doctor,” she said. “Our ongoing preparations in the Mission is basically a closure the extent of which we have not experienced since Covid.”

Military Status

Approximately three hundred out of four thousand regional national guard troops continue under national command under an command from Trump. Roughly two hundred of them had been sent to Oregon, where they were remaining in uncertainty in the midst of a judicial dispute over their assignment.

This week, Newsom said he had called the state military personnel under his command to manage charity kitchens during the federal closure.
